DOTHAN, AL (WTVY) The Houston County Commission has adopted a resolution to expedite the process of an adding an upgraded communication system for the Houston County Sheriff’s Office.
The resolution – passed Wednesday during the County Commission meeting – asks for an Attorney General’s opinion about bidding requirements. If the AG says the commission does not need to bid out the system, the process will move more quickly.
The current dispatch communications system used by the Sheriff’s Office is outdated and needs replacing.
"It's the way our Sheriff's deputies communicate with dispatch, it's the way our volunteers communicate with each other," said Mark Culver, Chairman, Houston County Commission. "We want to make sure those that serve us are able to talk to each other, talk to dispatch. We don't want to put any of our folks, whether volunteer or paid, in harm's way when they are out there serving the public."
The Houston County Commission hopes to implement the new communication system by the end of the year.
