Highlands students 'Choose kindness'

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) - Bullying hurts and sometimes it even leads to suicide.

How do you teach children about the dangers of bullying? Highlands Elementary School says, show them.

They found a unique way to teach that lesson by taking their students to the movies to see the film Wonder. It’s a story of a fifth grade boy who is picked on because of his looks.

"It really teachers you not to judge people and you need to give hope to other people by supporting them,” said Landon Strassburg. “You can never be too kind."

And about 90 of these LINK students walked out with a different perspective.
"I learned that there are always going to be some people in the world who don't like you. So you can build an invisible wall, say ‘I can't hear you, peace out haters!' ” said Takiyah Lowe.

"People sometimes call people names, and you just have to stand up for them,” added Judson Bailey.
The students just finished reading the novel by R.J. Palacio, a book inspired by a real-life story.
