Eight students transported to hospital from Walton County bus crash

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. (WTVY) — DeFuniak Springs Police responded to a school bus crash at the intersection of 20th Street and U.S. Highway 90 West at approximately 3 p.m. Friday.

72 year old J.B. Miller was attempting to cross Highway 90 onto N. 20th Street when the Walton County School Bus he was driving was struck by a 2 door Mitsubishi car operated by 19 year old Matthew Crabtree. Miller stated he didn’t see Crabtree’s vehicle when he crossed Highway 90 and into his path. Crabtree was headed east in the inside lane and did not have time to avoid the bus. He sustained minor cuts and was believed to have a concussion.

Crabtree was transported to a medical facility by a family member. Eight children, who had been riding the bus, were transported to Healthmark Regional Medical Center as a precaution. Miller was found to be at fault for Failing to Yield Right of Way and was issued a traffic citation.

Both drivers are from DeFuniak Springs.

Most of the Parents of the 22 students on board responded to the scene to pick their kids up. The remaining kids were picked up from the hospital.

Walton County School District Transportation Director Dennis Gray and Lt. James Pitman with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash on behalf of the school district.

The school bus was transporting elementary aged children from Kindergarten to the 5th Grade.
