Dothan to play Northview for Downtown Dothan Hoops Classic title

Dothan, AL (WTVY) Dothan faced a stiff challenge from Daleville in the semifinals of the Downtown Dothan Hoops Classic on Wednesday night. The Tigers trailed by six points at halftime, before clamping down to earn a 53-39 win.

With the victory, Dothan advanced to the championship game to play rival Northview at 7 p.m. on Thursday night. The Tigers have won the last three hoops classic titles.

For more than a half of Wednesday night's game, it appeared the Tigers wouldn't make it back to defend their title. With Kobe Baggett sitting out and Kevin Morris in foul trouble, the Tigers struggled to find a rhythm offensively.

Daleville didn't have those problems, using a mix of diving baskets a a pair of 3-pointers from Jaylyn Hinton to build a 24-18 halftime advantage.

The game would swing Dothan's way in the third quarter, as the Tigers outscored the Warhawks 16-4 to take control. Dothan followed that up with 19 points in the final period to hold off Daleville and advance to the finals.

Tyrez Lindsey was the only Dothan player in double figures, scoring 20 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Devin Taylor added nine points and Tyson Williams chipped in seven. Morris was held to just two points and four rebounds.

Hinton led Daleville with 15 points. The Warhawks will play in the consolation game on Thursday, facing Headland at 5:30 p.m.

Northview - 75 Headland - 43

Northview used a huge second half surge to roll into the finals of the Downtown Dothan Hoops Classic. The Cougars outscored the Rams 45-19 after halftime to cruise to the 75-43 victory.

With the win, the Cougars advanced to the championship game on Thursday night at 7 p.m. against rival Dothan.The Tigers beat the Cougars for the Hoops Classic title in 2014.

Jovante Lee sparked the Cougars big second half surge, hitting a barrage of 3-pointers and driving baskets in the third quarter, as the Cougars were building their lead. Lee had 23 points and 10 rebounds, including four 3-pointers.

Rod Melton had 12 points and nine boards, while Terrell Harris chipped in 11 points. The Cougars dominated in all phases, taking 70 field goal attempts to just 48 for the Rams.

Northview hit 8-of-24 3-point attempts, to just 1-of-15 for Headland. The Cougars outrebounded the Rams 51-35 and forced 18 turnovers, while committing just 11.

Antonio Johnson led Headland with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Rams will play Daleville in the consolation game at 5:30 on Thursday night.
