DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) — A police officer who worked as a resource officer at Dothan High School was arrested Wednesday for illegally having sex with a 17-year old student.

Dothan Police Chief Steve Parrish said Adrian Folmar is charged with two counts of violating Alabama’s School Employee Sex Act.

Parrish said specifics of the allegations will not be released because of the girl’s age. However, a police source not authorized to speak publicly regarding the matter told WTVY the alleged acts occurred off campus.

"It's certain disappointing and embarrassing for the department but we'll move forward. The officer arrested will be treated like anyone else," Parrish said.

An employee determination hearing for Folmar will be held later and he could be terminated. Until then, he is on administrative leave.

Folmar has been employed by the department for four years and worked as a School Resource Officer since April.

In 2012, Dothan High School Resource Officer Lanice Bonds was arrested on a similar charge. He is serving 10 years in prison and has a parole hearing set January 24.

The Alabama Legislature, in 2010, passed a bill making it illegal for a school employee to have sex with a student under the age of 19.

A North Alabama judge earlier this year ruled the law unconstitutional. The state is appealing.
