DOTHAN, Al. (WTVY) Dothan has been named a 2017 Playful City USA.
Dothan has won every year since it started more than a decade ago.
As a mom, Deidre Frith loves to bring her kids to the park.
She says, "It’s really great to have a place to take your kids where it’s safe."
From Westgate to Eastgate, nature walks to playgrounds, you get a variety of fun activities at Dothan parks.
Leisure Services assistant director Roy Kitts says that's why the city has been named a playful city for the past 11 years.
He says, "It’s the overall picture, not only is there a lot of parks and ballfields in Dothan but we have been adding to it yearly"
The national nonprofit, KaBOOM named 258 cities this year who they say, put the needs of families first and turn ordinary places into playful spaces.
The criteria to be chosen changes yearly, this year it was focused on what was new in each city.
Kitts says the addition of James Oates Park and the new pool at Westgate is what got them the honor.
Jessica Milstead brings her son to Westgate park, she says, it’s one of the best playful spaces in the city.
Kitts says, this year they’re going to be looking at maintaining the parks we already have.
