Boot camp gives job seekers skills to find careers

DOTHAN, AL (WTVY) — Margie Jolley’s journey to full-time employment began with Camp H.I.R.E.

“They helped me to direct myself to where I needed to be and what I needed to be looking for when I went to apply for a job,” said Jolley.

Two years ago, Jolley completed the 4-week camp hire program at the Alfred Saliba Family Services Center.

In boot camp fashion, job seekers like Jolley attend the camp to learn basic resume and interview skills, as well as work ethic.

Camp H.I.R.E. program director Belinda Mitchell says what sets this program apart, is that the center case manages each student and brings in local employers.

“Because of us partnering with them and getting those employers to believe kind of in them because we do, they are experiencing success,” said Mitchell.

Camp H.I.R.E. is in its fourth year, and the program continues to work. More than 60 percent of graduates going on to find permanent jobs.

And Jolley is one of those success stories. She went to work full-time as a custodian at the Family Center post-camp hire graduation.

“Really it is nothing you can’t do if you just apply yourself and put your mind to it,” said Jolley.

The next session of Camp H.I.R.E. will be June 5th - 29th. Sessions are held Monday to Thursday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Alfred Saliba Family Services Center in Dothan. Call 334-712-0090 to register for the program. Registration closes Friday, June 2.
