Another proposal for casino gambling in Alabama

DOTHAN, AL (WTVY) There is yet another proposal for casino gambling in Alabama.

Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver

It's a matter the legislature will likely address in its upcoming special session.

Will it affect a bingo operation in Houston County?

Center Stage hasn't had electronic bingo or casino type machines in years. In fact, it hasn't had them since it was Center Stage, but could that change soon.

The Alabama Legislature will discuss a lottery in its upcoming session, and it may discuss casino gambling.

There has been talk before about slot machines at the state's four greyhound tracks.

But, despite objections from those in southeast Alabama--Center Stage has been left out of of those talks.

Houston County Chairman Mark Culver doesn't believe the casino gambling proposal will get very far in the special session.

But, if it were to gain momentum Culver says he and others will head to Montgomery and try to convince lawmakers that Center Stage should be treated like the dog tracks.

Culver is now urging the legislature to concentrate on a lottery.

However, sooner or later he knows casino gambling will be discussed seriously.

When it is-- Culver says he'll be there fighting for Center Stage.

For now Center Stage continues to operate with a combination of laptop computers and paper bingo.

Its still not clear when a special session will be convened, but it will come in the next few weeks.
