Alabama school system closing early for Aug. 21 eclipse

Madison, Ala. (AL.Com) -- Madison City Schools will close early on Aug. 21 due to the total solar eclipse, Superintendent Robby Parker announced Thursday.

The closures - the first announced by a school system in Alabama - will occur at 10:30 a.m. for Pre-K; 11 a.m. for elementary; and 11:45 a.m. for secondary students.

"This is not a decision I've made lightly" Parker said on the system's Facebook page. "In the interest of safety for our students and affording them an opportunity to experience this unusual natural phenomenon outside the structured environment of a school campus, I felt it best to release schools early."
