VENUS (WTVY) -- Today marks the 55th anniversary of the world's first successful mission to another planet, one with very different weather than ours: Venus.
The Mariner 2 space probe by NASA reached the planet on December 14th, 1962.
It found that the temperature of the surface was nearly 800 degrees F!
Thick cloud layers kept it from taking pictures of the surface.
In fact, it wasn't until a while later than landers and other probes gave us a glimpse of the surface of Venus--which has atmospheric pressure over 90 times that of Earth.
