HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -- The Holmes County Sheriff's Office in Florida just welcomed another member to the force.

Two-year-old Highway is a Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix. He and his handler Jeremy Abbott work with narcotics.

Abbott said despite his size, Highway is just a gentle giant.

They've been paired for about four months now, both of them learning and growing together.

Abbott said working with Highway has also helped him become a better officer.

"It drives me more to go after narcotics, to actually get the drugs out of the community," Abbott said. "It's harmful here."

Fighting the drug problem isn't the only job Highway has. He'll also make special appearances at schools and other community events.

Highway was purchased through illegal drug money that was seized.
