Kenneth O’Neal Adkinson, 68, went to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at Southeast Alabama Medical Center after being recently diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 15, 2013, in Clearman Chapel of Southern Heritage Funeral Home with Reverend Billy Rich and Reverend Kenneth Harrison officiating. Burial will follow in Cottonwood City Cemetery with Southern Heritage Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 1:00p.m. until 2:00p.m Friday, November 15, 2013, at the funeral home prior to the services.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Randy Taylor, Stacy McCardle, David Williams, David Turner, Donald Brownlee, and Steve Nall, all of whom are former students, this being their final tribute to a former teacher.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Bob Williams, Thomas Spann, and all former students.
Kenneth was born April 13, 1945, in Dothan to the late Codis and Inez Bush Adkinson. He graduated from Dothan High School in 1963 and the University of Alabama in 1967 with a BS in Geology and later received an MS in Education from Troy University. He was a teacher at Cottonwood High School for thirty four years before retiring in 2001. Rehobeth was his next venue, substituting for eight years. Kenneth, a Baptist by faith, was a quiet, kind, giving, compassionate and loving person. He was a fantastic cook and would have made a great chef. Kenneth enjoyed old cowboy movies, loved to read, and loved his cats. In the last three years, he enjoyed target shooting with his best friend, Thomas Spann, and was a member of the Headland Skeet and Gun Club.
He is survived by his wife of forty- six years, Cecelia Wood Adkinson; brother, Wayne (Eva) Adkinson; nieces, Candice (Brad) Burton & their son, Joseph; Kathryn (Jonathan) Stout, all of Birmingham, Alabama; aunts, uncles, cousins, special friend Thomas Spann, and cats Molly and Patches.
The family humbly requests that any gifts of food be omitted.
