Wiregrass leaders recognize Vietnam War veterans with a "Welcome Home" day ceremony.
40 years ago many veterans felt like didn't receive a warm welcome when they returned home from war. Today was the day to give them that welcome says Dothan mayor Mike Schmitz.
This national day of recognition was an opportunity to express appreciation and gratitude for those who sacrificed their lives in Vietnam.
"We recognize that the veterans of Vietnam were never really given the same welcome home that we've been afforded as recent veterans of our nation’s war so it's very appropriate that they receive the same type of treatment that we as active duty service members have received in our recent service," said U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Marcus A. Gengler.
On this day two years ago president Barack Obama proclaimed March 29 as National Vietnam Veterans Day.
