Weekly Field Trip Encourages Physical Activity & Healthy Eating Habits

DOTHAN, AL--Every Thursday during summer break the students walk three blocks to Aunt Katie's Garden.
Thursday they planted watermelons and banana peppers.
Organizers say the purpose of the garden field trip is to encourage physical activity and healthy eating habits.
The kids also have their favorite part.

"Being able to dig the hole put them inside and cover them up with the dirt and watch it grow," said Tavarus Leverett.

"My favorite part is mostly just watching them grow from something so little to something huge and delicious," added Darien Burthlong.

When the fruits and vegetables are ready, the children and their families will be able to stop by and pick what they've planted.
