New Sign Regulations for Dothan, A Work in Progress

DOTHAN, AL--You see them every where, some tall, some small and even animated. But, some of that may soon change.

"With sign regulations that's probably one of the ways to enhance the appearance of your community," said Todd McDonald.

Allen Sands owns and operates Wiregrass Wireless.
He says he uses the signs outside his store to direct customers and make it easier for them to find him.

"Signs get people's attention to know where you are, so we try to have neat signs banners along that line, keep them fresh, keep them new," explained Sands.

Sands says he's not against new rules but he doesn't think pages of guidelines are necessary.

"You can have a rule to a certain extent," added Sands.

Some of the provisions in the new ordinance are calling for window signs to not exceed 50 percent of a window area.

It also changes how far signs can be from property limits. Instead of the current 10 feet rule, it calls for only 3 feet.

The biggest concern now is digital billboards.

"What we had a big discussion about today was how bright they can be or not be," said McDonald.

And that's because of the risk it poses to drivers.

"They'll have cutesy little fly ins and scrolls, studies have shown that that tends to attract the drivers eye," explained McDonald.

Which can lead to an accident.
Sands says compared to most cities, he doesn't think signs in Dothan are a big problem but that's up to the city to decide.

The planning commission will hold another public hearing next month, August 15th at 9 a.m. in Dothan City Commission Chambers.

Once the planning commission comes up with a recommendation they will submit it to city commissioners for approval.
