Houston County's road and bridge department has received a huge statewide award for being innovative and cost-saving.
It's called the John F. Courson Excellence in County Engineering Award. Houston County was recognized for developing a pioneering technique for replacing bridge bearing pads. County workers have been using air bags and air jacks to lift concrete bridge decks.
"All of us feel great about it. We're surprised because that is a big award. We appreciate the award but you know we just try to come up with ideas to fix things at a low cost and make the roadways safer to the public," said Jim Jordan, the engineering project supervisor.
Using this technique has only cost the county $80,000. If they would have hired an outside contractor the project costs would have been $500,000.
