Dr. Roberts will receive a Volunteer of the Year Plaque on Monday, November 25 at 4pm. Jaime Lewis-Hale, Executive Director, nominated Dr. Roberts for this Girls Inc. award that included other nominees throughout the Southeast region.
Six years ago, Dr. Bertha Roberts, an elementary education professor with Troy University Dothan, contacted Girls Inc. of Dothan to discuss a possible partnership that would benefit both her future college students and our girls.
Every year since, Dr. Roberts has integrated her Summer semester college class into our Summer program. Although the implementation of their program differs every year, the goals remain the same – to provide college students with hands-on experience preparing engaging lessons and practicing classroom management skills and to reduce Summer learning loss by providing our girls with science, math and relevant technology education and inspiring them to pursue secondary education.
This partnership with the University has added to the quality of Girls Inc.’s Summer program tremendously, and would not be possible if it were not for Dr. Roberts. A minimum of 100 girls each year (for a total of 600 girls) receive quality education in the areas on science, math and relevant technology for two to four hours a week for six weeks.
