HOOVER, Ala. (AP) -- Decades after dropping out of high school to help her parents financially and missing her chance at a beauty pageant, 79-year-old Verdell Goodson has been crowned Ms. Alabama Nursing Home.
Goodson, an Enterprise Health and Rehab Center resident, was one of 10 finalists competing for the title Monday at the Hyatt Regency in Hoover.
Goodson will serve as spokeswoman for state nursing homes and for the Alabama Nursing Home Association. A field of 70 contestants was narrowed to the 10 finalists in a preliminary competition in June in Montgomery.
AL.com reports Goodson worked in the textile industry for 40 years and eventually became a supervisor, inspector and quality manager. She earned her GED from a junior college and served as chairwoman for the Enterprise Water Department, among other things.
