As a person ages, there is a greater likelihood of health problems, frailty and the need for family support and assistance. Alabama Cooperative Extension is offering training for people who would like to learn the basic aspects of caring for an elderly or disabled person at home.
Those completing the training will be better able to provide basic home care services to those in need, whether you are a family member, friend, neighbor or interested in increasing employment opportunities in the care giving field. The training consists of three exciting classes held on Wednesdays, February 6, 13, and 20th at noon and will go until 4:30 p.m. at Wiregrass Foundations, 1532 Whatley Drive, Dothan. This building is behind Flowers Hospital, and can be reached by traveling on John D. Odom to Whatley and turning at the light. Travel east past the Social Security office towards the roundabout and the building is on the left.
There is a one-time registration fee of $15 which will cover expenses, including snacks. The program offers 13 ½ training hours for all three sessions in the basic care of disabled and older people. Alabama Cooperative Extension System will provide a manual, Alabama Home Caregiver-A Resource to Assist the Home Care Provider, to all caregivers.
In addition, many of the presenters will have handouts/publications available on their topic. Certificates of Attendance from Alabama Cooperative Extension will be available at the last session.
Dale, Geneva, Henry and Houston County Extension offices are participating in this training. The training will offer hands-on demonstrations and training in durable medical equipment, body mechanics, personal care, proper care of pressure sores, along with health monitoring skills, and information on medications do's and don'ts, basic dementia, behavioral complications and caregiver's stress, nutrition and diabetes, food safety and other topics related to care giving.
Please make a $15 check for registration out to: Home Caregiver Workshop. Mail it to Dale County Extension Office at 202 South Hwy. 123, Ozark, AL 36361. If necessary, registration can be paid at the door.
