Dothan Sales Tax is on a Decline

Over the past few months cash register's haven't been ringing as much compared to last year.

It has been yet another down month for sales tax revenue in Dothan. This is now three out of four months that revenue has failed to meet last year's numbers. Dothan collected about $4.91 million in sales tax in May. Making them $126,000 short from last year's numbers. Overall the city has currently collected almost $300,000 less than it did during the same time period last year. However, the city still remains $1.74 million ahead of its budget due to other sales like lodging and automotive sales succeeding.

"I think that it is a cyclical kind of things that's happening with the economy, so I would think that would pick back up come this summer and the lodging will go right behind it," said Bob Hendrix, the executive director of the Dothan Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Now even though the sales tax has been on the downfall. Automotive sales are up 23 percent.
Bringing in more than $180, 000 to the city. Officials believe that next month's numbers will reflect some summer traffic and sporting events coming to Dothan this month.
