DOTHAN, AL--It's one of the most important pieces of equipment Dothan police officers are required to wear.
"It's one of those things you put on everyday and hope that you never have to use it but you don't want to go to work without," said Sgt. Rachel David.
That's why the city wants to make sure all officers have the latest equipment.
But not just Dothan police. They also want to help other towns who may not have the funding.
"In the past we've given those to the local towns around us," said Dothan Mayor Mike Schmitz.
The vest proved it's importance back in March of 2008. When two officers walked into a convenience store that was being robbed.
"One of them was actually struck in the chest area and the vest was the difference," said David.
Mayor Schmitz says the $25,000 grant buys about 8 or 10 vests.
"Obviously the safety of our officers is number one and to have the best is important in our community and that's what this allows us to do," explained Mayor Schmitz.
So you're probably wondering, if every officer already wears one of these, why is the city trying to get more, well these vests do expire.
"They are labeled with an expiration date, it's very important that we do keep those updated and have the newest in technology and shelf life," said David.
The typical shelf life for most vests is 3 to 5 years.
The mayor says they apply for this grant every year and usually get it so he's pretty hopeful they'll get it this time, as well.
The old vests are recycled and used for training purposes.
