TROY, AL--For Paula Whotlow, the Boys and Girls Club of Pike gives her two children something to look forward to.

"For them to have the boys and girls club to come and go to and do activities here and go out and swim and go on different trips that's a lot," explained Whotlow.

As a parent and a club board member Whotlow says keeping the doors open is important for all the children in the community.

"Closing's not an option for me, there's a serious need," added Whotlow.

Due to low summer enrollment and a small budget, board members met Wednesday to decide if they should continue the summer program.

"Boys and girls club gives us a lot of program grants fortunately they're good grants but a lot of times they don't pay the salary," said club president Pamela Nealey.

Wednesday's meeting did result in a final decision.

"Today we decided what I've always said is that closing is not an option," said Nealey.

At Wednesday's board meeting they discussed ways to save money one example would be how they cut grass.

"Cutting grass, we can get together as a board, we can cut grass," explained Whotlow.

The board is set to meet again Friday to discuss fundraisers and ways to cut costs.

Registration is still open for the summer program.
