Dothan leaders teamed up today to feed and help pay the bills for several families in need.
"I hope we have the lucky ticket because I need it," said Evary Helms, a Dothan resident.
Helms is one of many people that need a holiday blessing. That's why she along with other wiregrass residents camped outside the New Christian Fellowship Church in Dothan.
Volunteers passed out free food, music and tickets.
Hundreds of people are anticipated having one of their tickets pulled, When they were revealed, community members had a chance of receiving some cash or a check for the holiday season.
If Helms wins she knows exactly will her money will go.
“To pay my light bill," she says.
To help people like helms, Dr, Floyd Griffin and Houston County Commissioner Kevin Dorsey pitched in financially as well. They called out numbers to see who the lucky one- hundred winners were.
"I took my whole check and I donated my whole check to my community…that's what God layed on my heart and that's what I did, said Dorsey.
Dr. Floyd Griffin added, "We find it necessary to be able to give back to the community because everybody needs some help."
This is the first time Dorsey and Griffin have teamed up to help the wiregrass and after seeing how much their donations mean they plan to do more charitable works in the future.
Organizers didn't say how much they pitched in today but it was enough to help several Dothan residents pay their utility bills.
