LONDON (AP) - The Church of England has opened its national assembly, which will discuss allowing the consecration of women as
bishops and other church matters.
The General Synod was addressed Monday by Cardinal Cormac
Murphy-O'Connor, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England
He lamented the divisions in the Church of England, calling them detrimental to Christianity's witness in an increasingly secular society.
The divisive proposal to allow women bishops is to be discussed Wednesday.
