LAS VEGAS (AP) - Nevada's Clark County commissioners have scaled
down a pastor's proposal for a trio of super-sized crosses to mark
his Las Vegas-area church.
The commission sided with neighbors who opposed a South Hills
Church Community waiver to erect crosses 90 feet, 80 feet and 70
Commissioners instead said the church can erect crosses of 50 feet, 40 feet and 35 feet. That's still above the normal 35-foot height limit in the area near two major highways.
Pastor Bret Johnson says he thought the extra-large crosses would be good next to the busy intersection and his 36-foot-tall church.
But the county commissioner who represents the area says allowing such big crosses would prompt nearby businesses to demand huge signs.
