Lion Cub Greets Pope in the Vatican

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Benedict has been greeted by an unusual
guest during his weekly audience at the Vatican: a feisty lion cub.

The young lion was brought to the pontiff Wednesday as part of a
performance by members of the Medrano Circus. An amused Benedict
looked on as jugglers in sparkling costumes performed.

He got up when the lion cub was carried closer so he could pat it.

The lion's response: a roar, which drew laughter from the Vatican audience.
