AMMAN, Jordan (AP) - The presiding bishop of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America says the Israeli invasion of Gaza does
not meet the criteria for a just war.
Bishop Mark Hanson, who also is president of the Lutheran World
Federation, is in the Holy Land to host of meeting of 43 of his
denomination's 66 American bishops.
Hanson says Israel's operation in Gaza fails to meet just war criteria such as proportional response and the protection of non-combatants. He meets today with Jordan's King Abdullah and plans to meet with Israeli and Palestinian leaders as well.
Hanson says Lutheran bishops are celebrating the Feast of Epiphany today at the site on the Jordan River where Jesus is believed to have been baptized. Tonight, he says, they'll join Orthodox Christians celebrating Christmas Eve in Bethlehem.
