Episcopal Bishop Calls for End to Violence in Gaza

NEW YORK (AP) - The presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church is
calling for an end to the violence in Gaza that has left more than 300 dead.

The Most Rev. Katherine Jefferts Schori says she joins those around the world calling for an immediate end to the Israeli assault in Gaza and rocket attacks by militants on Israel.

A statement by Bishop Schori says the Israeli military offensive has been "wholly disproportionate." She's also calling on both the White House and the incoming Obama administration to call for both sides to return immediately to the negotiating table.

Schori says innocent lives are being lost in a land that is called Holy and as "Christians are remembering the Prince of Peace."

She says a Gaza City hospital (Al Ahli Arab) run by the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem is treating many injured and wounded.
