Pope Calls for Expanded Respect for Human Rights

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Benedict says he's praying for intensified efforts to guarantee human rights around the globe so that everyone is respected and treated with dignity.

Benedict made the comments at the end of a concert at the Vatican marking the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Benedict said much progress has been made, but he says renewed
efforts are needed to tackle "barriers" that have arisen based on race, religion, political opinion and other beliefs.

The Vatican's anniversary activities Wednesday included honoring two priests and two organizations involved in peace and justice initiatives.
