New Life Pastor Talks About Security a Year After Shootings

DENVER (AP) - The Rev. Brady Boyd has been fielding questions
from other pastors about security ever since a young gunman killed
two teenage sisters outside his Colorado Springs church a year ago.

Yesterday, New Life Church marked the anniversary of the shootings of Stephanie and Rachel Works by Matthew Murray, who earlier that day had killed two youths at a Denver-area missionary training center.

Boyd wouldn't go into specifics about his conversations with other pastors. But he said topics have included evacuation planningand making armed guards visible in a way that's not alarming to congregants.

After killing the sisters and wounding their father, Murray entered a church hallway, where he was shot and wounded by a volunteer security guard. Murray then took his own life.

New Life now has a full-time security director and armed volunteer guards posted around the church.
