Gay Marriage Ban Passes, But Losers Dispute Impact

LOS ANGELES (AP) - California voters have amended their state constitution to say that only marriage between a man and a woman is
valid and recognized in California.

The Rev. Jim Garlow, who led a religious coalition to pass Proposition 8, says that should not only stop same-sex marriages, but also invalidate the 18,000 performed in California since June.

But gay-rights groups already are challenging the new ban in court, and California Attorney General Jerry Brown has said existing same-sex marriages will remain valid.

Gay-marriage bans also passed in Arizona and Florida Tuesday, elating religious conservatives who had little else to cheer about in Tuesday's elections.
