Pastors Meet to Talk Church at The Movies

SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) - Church leaders from across the country
have exchanged ideas in a Maryland movie theater at the first
Theatre Church Conference.

A spokesman for National CineMedia, the event sponsor, says the
event Wednesday and Thursday brought together pastors and ministry
leaders to discuss the future of basing churches in movie theaters.

CineMedia spokesman Barry Brown says more than 180 churches are
housed in theaters. The conference addressed the need for pastors
to learn how to use the theater space and equipment to enhance
Sunday services with visuals and sound amid the smell of popcorn.

Rev. Mark Batterson, pastor of National Community Church in Washington, has led a theater church for over a decade. He said a
church atmosphere can be "less threatening" to people who are
"unchurched."
