WASHINGTON (AP) -- A man suspected of shooting and wounding a security guard in the Washington headquarters of a Christian lobbying group had been volunteering at a community center for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

A law enforcement official identified the suspect as Floyd Corkins, who'd been volunteering for months at The DC Center for the LGBT Community.

Another official said that before opening fire, the shooter made a negative reference to the work of the Family Research Council, which opposes gay marriage. FRC president Tony Perkins has defended Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy's remarks against gay marriage.

Advocacy groups across the ideological spectrum condemned the violence, with some calling it a hate crime against Christians. Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, said it shows that "labeling pro-marriage groups as `hateful' must end."
