WASHINGTON (AP) -- Congressman Paul Ryan's proposed cuts in social programs to reduce the budget deficit have prompted some of his fellow Catholics to question whether he's being faithful to church teachings.
The man Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has picked to be his running mate confronted those accusations in an April speech at Georgetown University.
At the Jesuit school, Ryan insisted his proposals would boost the economy and help Americans rise out of poverty.
He criticized President Barack Obama's economic policies, saying: "Our budget offers a better path, consistent with the timeless principles of our nation's founding and, frankly, consistent with how I understand my Catholic faith."
Unlike fellow Catholics Vice President Joe Biden and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, Ryan supports the church's opposition to same-sex marriage and abortion rights.
