OAK CREEK, Wis. (AP) -- Police are calling Sunday's deadly shooting at a Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee an act of domestic terrorism.
The gunman killed six people before he was killed in a shootout with police outside the temple. Among those wounded is one of the first officers who responded to 911 calls.
The attack happened during Sunday service. Other congregants took cover. Some hid in closets. Others texted friends outside for help.
Many Sikhs in the U.S. worship on Sundays at a temple, or gurdwara, and a typical service consists of meditation and singing in a prayer room where worshippers remove their shoes and sit on the floor. Worshippers gather afterward for a meal that is open to community members, regardless of their religious beliefs.
Survivors said they had never had any problems at the temple, although some say they had faced harassment after 9/11. Some Sikhs across the country were targeted for harassment and attacks because they wear turbans and are mistaken for Muslims.
