WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama has attended church with his daughters on the next-to-last Sunday before election day.
Obama and his two daughters walked to St. John's Episcopal Church through Lafayette Park across from the White House on a brisk and overcast Sunday morning. First lady Michelle Obama remained at the White House, preparing to depart a day early on a Midwest campaign trip as Hurricane Sandy approached the East Coast.
In the sermon, St. John's assistant rector, the Rev. Virginia Gerbasi, preached from the Gospel account of Jesus healing a blind man, and she urged worshippers to ask God for the vision they need.
Obama and his daughters knelt at the altar for Communion with other worshippers and joined in singing "Amazing Grace" and "A Mighty Fortress is Our God." The president also shook hands with congregants while exchanging the traditional greeting, "Peace be with you."
