INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Bishop Joseph Tobin has been installed as the Roman Catholic archbishop of Indianapolis.
The 60-year-old Detroit native will be the spiritual leader of about 225,000 Catholics in 39 counties of central and southern Indiana, but he told priests and others at his installation Mass Monday that he will be their "chief pastor," not their only pastor.
Tobin calls his appointment by Pope Benedict "a great adventure."
The Indianapolis Star reports that more than 1,000 people attended the Mass at Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Indianapolis.
Tobin formerly was a high-ranking Vatican official who tried to resolve tensions between the Vatican and U.S. nuns before his transfer.
