MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Jefferson County Circuit Judge Robert Vance Jr. is the only Democrat to sign up to run for chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court.

Vance will face Republican Roy Moore, who was removed as chief justice in 2003 for refusing to obey a federal court order to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the rotunda of the state's judicial building. He's attempting a political comeback after losing races for governor in 2006 and 2010.

Vance calls Moore "a polarizing figure" and describes himself as someone who would work with Democrats and Republicans to address budget cuts that have left the state court system struggling to maintain services.

The Democratic Party began seeking a new candidate after a party committee disqualified the original Democratic nominee, Harry Lyon, on Friday. Lyon said Wednesday that he now plans to vote for Roy Moore as a matter of principle.
