WASHINGTON (AP) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has thanked thousands of Christians meeting in Washington for supporting the Jewish state.
In a live satellite broadcast to Christians United for Israel, Netanyahu said the growth of radical Islam in the Mideast could turn it into a region "where women are brutally suppressed, where minorities are relentlessly persecuted, where Christians fear for their lives."
He said American Christians understand Israel's need to defend itself and to stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
Netanyahu reminded them that Israel is the land of the Jewish patriarchs and prophets, and the land of Jesus Christ.
Christians United for Israel, an organization founded by San Antonio pastor John Hagee, considers modern Israel a fulfillment of Bible prophecies that the Jewish people would return to the land God gave them.
