NY Appeals Court Hesitant To Allow Worship In School

NEW YORK (AP) -- A federal appeals panel has heard fresh arguments on whether New York City can ban worship services in public schools, and seems hesitant to let them continue.

The three judge panel had plenty of questions as the 12-year-old case came before it for a fifth time on Monday.

Two of the three judges kept a lawyer for the Bronx Household of Faith on the defensive as he argued that a lower court judge was right to rule in the church's favor earlier this year.

That decision barred New York City from enforcing a law that would block churches from conducting their worship service in public schools during after-school hours.

The appeals court did not immediately rule.
