Marriage On Agenda As Catholic Bishops Meet

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The nation's Roman Catholic bishops are meeting this week in Maryland, one of the three states where voters legalized same-sex marriage last Tuesday.

San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, who chairs the bishops' Subcommittee on the Promotion and Defense of Marriage, will make a presentation in the wake of votes for gay marriage in Maryland, Maine and Washington state, and Minnesota voters' rejection of a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, also will speak at the Baltimore conference after an election season in which the church warned of threats to its religious liberty in the federal health care law.

Dozens of Catholic dioceses and institutions as well as evangelicals are suing to block the law's requirement that they provide insurance that covers birth control, including morning-after pills they consider tantamount to abortion.
