CHARLOTTE (AP) -- Zach Wahls says his parents took him to church and taught him to respect people whose faith defines marriage as between a man and a woman.
But Wahls told the Democratic National Convention that his parents are lesbians who loved him as much as a mother and father could.
The 20-year-old Wahls said he grew up in Iowa and advanced to Eagle Scout, but was surprised at how many Americans seemed to feel threatened by same-sex relationships.
He said, "supporting a view of marriage as between a man and woman isn't radical. For many people, it's a matter of faith. We respect that."
But Wahls rejected the contention that children need both a mother and a father, insisting all they really need is a loving family like his.
