ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- The head of the Knights of Columbus says it's the duty of Catholic voters to oppose candidates who support abortion rights and restrictions on the Church's religious freedom.

Supreme Knight Carl Anderson told 2,000 members of the world's largest Catholic fraternal organization that the faithful should vote against any candidate who supports such "intrinsic evils," and suggested that to do otherwise could invite God's judgment.

He warned, "The political choices faced by citizens may affect the individual's salvation."

Referring to the Obama administration's birth control mandate, Anderson said it's wrong for government to make employers provide coverage for drugs and treatments they consider immoral.

Pope Benedict, in a letter to the Knights of Columbus annual convention, noted what he called "the unprecedented gravity of these new threats to the Church's liberty and public moral witness."
