Gingrich: Court That Barred Graduation Prayer Should Be Abolished

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Republican presidential candidate Newt
Gingrich says Congress should abolish the federal court whose judge barred a high school valedictorian from praying at her June
graduation ceremony in Castroville, Texas.

Federal Judge Fred Biery had prohibited Angela Hindenbrand from
asking audience members to join in prayer or bow their heads, and
had forbidden students from ending remarks with "amen," or even using the word "prayer." His order was overturned on appeal.

At a weekend presidential candidates' forum in Iowa hosted by Christian conservatives, Gingrich said "Judge Biery's court should
be abolished now." He said Congress had abolished federal courts
in the past and could do so again.

Gingrich said Congress also has the constitutional authority to limit courts' jurisdiction, and should consider doing so on issues like the definition of marriage.
