WASHINGTON (AP) -- A conservative Christian activist has joined the chorus calling on a Missouri Republican to quit his campaign for the U.S. Senate.
The Rev. Patrick Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition, says "Congressman Todd Akin's comment using the term `legitimate rape' is offensive, repugnant and troubling."
Mahoney's call for Akin to quit the race is significant because both strongly oppose abortion and agree on most social issues.
The Missouri congressman apologized Tuesday for saying women are able to prevent pregnancies in cases of what he called "legitimate rape," but added that he didn't intend to end his campaign.
In a statement, Mahoney said he respects Akin's record in Congress, but believes the rape remarks would overshadow the Senate race.
