PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A Catholic newspaper in Rhode Island is donating $14,000 to charitable organizations after a former advertiser pleaded guilty in federal court to defrauding the terminally ill.
The Rhode Island Catholic said Tuesday it will donate $7,000 each to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island at Bishop Thomas Tobin's direction. That's about how much the paper got in advertising funds from Joseph Caramadre of Estate Planning Resources.
Prosecutors say Caramadre's firm took out ads offering $2,000 to the terminally ill, then lied to them to get personal information and purchased bonds and annuities in their names without consent.
Caramadre and an ex-employee pleaded guilty to wire fraud and conspiracy Monday. Bishop Tobin says the newspaper believes it best to "disassociate itself from any improper activity" and donate the funds.
