MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) -- Witnesses say gunmen suspected of belonging to a radical Islamist sect have killed at least 15 people in a village in northeast Nigeria, tying up men, women and children before slitting their throats.
The assault happened Friday in a village on the outskirts of Maiduguri, where the sect known as Boko Haram first launched its campaign of shootings and car bombings. A village teacher says the gunmen shouted "God is great" before rounding up the victims to be slaughtered.
A military spokesman issued a statement saying only five people were killed in the village, but military and police officials routinely downplay casualty figures because they're under pressure from their superiors to minimize the perceived effects of attacks by Boko Haram.
Authorities say at least seven other people have been killed in recent days around Christian villages in central Nigeria.
