Alaskan Retreat Welcomes Wounded Troops and Spouses

PORT ALSWORTH, Alaska (AP) -- While evangelist Billy Graham was in the hospital this week, the Rev. Franklin Graham was monitoring his father's condition from Alaska, where Samaritan's Purse has launched a ministry to wounded troops and their spouses.

Franklin Graham says Operation Heal Our Troops welcomes four or five couples at a time for a week of outdoor activities and marriage workshops in the wilderness some 200 miles west of Anchorage.

He says war wounds like missing limbs and head injuries add stress to marriages, so the week at Samaritan's Lodge gives troops and their spouses a chance to share their burdens together and in separate small groups with an on-site chaplain.

Franklin Graham says the mission is to provide the couples with "spiritual refreshment, physical renewal, and marriage enrichment."

This weekend, Franklin Graham will preach at Rock the Lakes, an evangelistic festival in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Billy Graham is recuperating at home after being treated for bronchitis at Mission Hospital in Asheville, N.C.
