WRIGHTSTOWN, N.J. (AP) -- An Air Force airman and his male partner have been united in a civil union ceremony held at the New Jersey military base where the airman is stationed.
Dozens of friends and family members attended Saturday's ceremony for Tech. Sgt. Erwynn Umali and Will Behrens. It was presided over by Kay Reeb, a Navy chaplain with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.
Reeb, who had never presided over a civil union ceremony before, said she was delighted to take part. Reeb says she told the couple to "love each other and trust in each other and in God."
The same-sex ceremony was held in the base chapel, a use of federal property that some members of Congress have said would be a violation of the Defense of Marriage Act.
