KADUNA, Nigeria (AP) -- At least eight people have been killed in a suicide bombing at a church in northern Nigeria.

Authorities say more than 100 others were wounded when a suicide bomber rammed an SUV loaded with explosives into a Catholic church in Kaduna during Sunday Mass.

As rescuers tried to reach the wounded, angry youths armed with machetes and clubs beat two Muslims to death as they passed by the smoldering ruins of the church. Police and soldiers ordered everyone to go home, hoping to prevent additional reprisal attacks.

The car bombing is the latest in a series of high-casualty attacks targeting Nigerian churches.

No group immediately claimed responsibility, but rumors had circulated beforehand that the radical Islamist sect Boko Haram (hah-RAHM') might try to launch an attack during the weekend's Muslim holiday. The group is blamed for hundreds of killings this year alone.

In Washington last week, the Christian Association of Nigerian Americans said the U.S. could reduce the weapons and funding reaching Boko Haram by declaring it a foreign terrorist organization.
